  • To ensure a safe working environment for co-workers, customers, suppliers, and delivery personnel.
  • To load and unload trucks, pick customer orders and strap together in a safe organized manner for loading.
  • Ensure the yard is neat and organized.
  • Understand and adhere to safety policies and procedures.
  • Identify hazards and advise supervisor (s) of these hazards.
  • Ensure that proper PPE is being worn to entering the shop and yard (s)
  • Steel toes boots, shoes, safety vests for yard or appropriate identifiable clothing, gloves should be worn when handling most products to prevent/reduce cuts and or pinching of fingers.
  • Inspect all equipment prior to using/operating –chop saws should be inspected to ensure that they are safe to operate, forklifts should have a pre-trip inspection done every day prior to being moved to ensure that they are safe to operate.
  • Strapping of material on production carts (use of banding machine) ensure that when the lifts are strapped up that they are banded tightly so that when they are transported that they don’t shift, also ensure that the lifts are as square as possible for easier/safer loading of material on trucks that leave the yard.
  • When unloading production carts ensure that you have a clear path as well as enough room to safely remove the lift from the cart. Ensure that your forks are level or tilted slightly downward to prevent damage to the product (forks should be 70% – 90% through the lift)
  • Putting material in storage racks – transport the lift slightly off the ground 6 -8 inches to the racks that you will be placing the lift or bundles in, once in front of the rack (ensuring that your forks do not line up with the rack arm or you will damage the rack arm) lift your forks so that they are approximately 5 – 6 inches above the rack arms and drive in until the product is relatively tight to the back of the racks and lower the product gently on to the arms making sure that the lift is secure prior to backing the lift right out.
  • Loading trucks- when loading any trucks ensure that the driver is well back and out of the way until he is needed to strap, or belly strap the load. Load heavier material on the bottom and lighter material on the top. More delicate and awkward lifts should be placed at or near the top of the load whenever possible to make the load as safe as possible and to reduce product damage whenever possible.
  • Mapping and planning loads- Whenever possible this should be done prior to the truck’s arrival. You will co-ordinate with your supervisor. Utilize the deck to its utmost to disperse the weight as evenly as possible so that all the weight isn’t at the front or rear of truck. Don’t stack skids in the front of the trailer. You must save room to apply the skids between lifts to get the most support.
  • Unloading trucks – identify the material to be unloaded and the weight of the material prior to unloading it to ensure that the lift does not exceed the forklift’s capacity. If it exceeds the capacity of your lift identify the proper equipment to get it unloaded safely and use it to have the operator unload it for you.
  • Stacking coils – Stack coils from the largest (bottom) to smallest (top) ensuring that the coils and skids / pallets are safe to stack on. If they are not safe to stack on make sure that the coil and skid are left as a single or that they are stacked near the top (when safe to do so).
  • Housekeeping – Ensure that the yard (s) is kept neat and clean – (pick up wood blocks and wood lath regularly as well as any other garbage that may come into the yard to prevent somebody from slipping, tripping or running over these which may cause them to lose their load off their forks.
  • Ensure that you are always aware of what is going on around you, this will help prevent accidents to you or somebody else.
